How It All Began
As fall arrives, many of us begin thinking about the holiday season and look forward to spending time with family. We realize how important our loved ones are, especially when the holidays come around.
For many of the families we work with, this time of the year through the New Year is the hardest. We would like to offer our victims and volunteers an opportunity to join the DUI Victims Center of Kansas and local law enforcement a special way to remember their loved ones through this holiday season.
The week of Thanksgiving is when the Holiday Drive for Victims begins.
Volunteers write the names of victims from throughout the state of Kansas onto thousands of red ribbons. The names on the ribbons are our way of remembering all those who have been injured and lost by an under the influence driver. Then, staff and volunteers travel to law enforcement agencies all over the state and tie the ribbons to patrol car antennas.
Law enforcement leave the red ribbons on their car antenna throughout the holiday season until the new year but if you look hard enough you’ll see patrol cars that always have a red ribbon on their antenna!
In addition to providing the red ribbons to law enforcement we also provide them with a light snack-typically sandwiches and cookies to thank them for working through the holidays and being away from their families to protect ours.
The DUI Victims Center of Kansas provides services to victims and their families and increases awareness of the traumatic consequences of drinking and drugged impaired driving.
